Our recent boat trip on the Solent to see the sea forts included passing St Helen’s Fort the smallest fort in the chain of sea forts and is closest to the Isle of Wight. At very low tides there is a causeway that you can walk out to get a close up view of this fort. It’s main task was to protect the St Helen’s anchorage. It suffered very badly from subsidence which forced changes to the number of both to the fort and the guns fitted to the fort in ended up with x 2 10-inch muzzle loading guns.
